State interventions especially for women and families affected by sorcery accusations and gender-based violence in Papua New Guinea are challenging or often do not happen. However, there are some provinces that have response units that play a part in rescuing survivors of sorcery accusation related violence. The Rapid Response Team lead by Peter Lari is a police unit in the Simbu Province that supports the immediate response to cases of violent sorcery accusations. As a child growing up Peter himself experienced the impact of sorcery related violence and accusation as his family was forced to relocate. Peter’s story explores his motivation and commitment for his work as a police officer. Peter also discusses the processes of mediation that are important in creating and maintaining lasting peace. |
